Flexing for Beginners
by: Ken Jenkins

In Monsterpocalypse, there are many techniques and tactics that make a good player into a great player. For those players, just as important as P-die generation, map control, and unit turns is the little discussed topic of Monster Form Flexing. By this, I mean the practice of moving down to the Alpha form of a monster at the end of a Monster Activation in order to preserve Hyper form health or to promote unit synergy with Alpha form abilities. I personally love this tactic with my favorite of all monsters, Terra Khan, but it is a viable and important strategy for many of the monsters in the game. There are multiple aspects to the question of “To Flex or not to Flex?”

Welcome to the first of many blog posts (including videos in the next month or so) by yours truly. I have been really wanting to start writing about my Monsterpocalypse experience for a few months now but really didn’t know where I wanted to take the blog. After a few months of ideas rolling around, I think I’ve finally got one I’m willing to stick with. So, what is it?
I’m going to attempt to play Monsterpocalypse on a $30 a month budget (this goes out to all the other people in the world who don’t use their money as pictured to the right). That’s playing Monsterpocalypse competitively for $1 a day, or $360 a year. I’m including in this $30 budget any money I spend on the game, including product and tournament entry fees.
Is this possible? Can a player really be competitive on such a budget? These are all questions I desperately want answers to, so here goes everything!

I am one of the few Monsterpocalypse players around that thinks using Diemos-9 is not a way to commit gaming suicide (most players acknowledge that his mega form is playable so I will concentrate on ultra and the alpha). I can understand why most people think this; he is probably the least mobile monster in the game, he has a blast stat that would be hard pressed to hurt a fly, he has not much in the way of defense or health, in fact, it appears that his only redeeming point is his insanely good brawl.
Diemos’ ultra probably possesses the best brawl in the game. His ultra form has a brawl stat of 8 with three boost dice. This may not seem that great, but our three-legged friend has a whole host of abilities to back him up.

Mega Yasheth: The Best Figure You’ll Never See

As a relatively recent H.P. Lovecraft aficionado and immediate Cthulhu fan-and-cultist, it was with almost indecent pleasure that I discovered the “Lords of Cthul” faction for Monsterpocalypse. This is Privateer Press’ most recent offering, coming rather fortuitously for any Mythos fans after the ill-fated run of HorrorClix (for whom, it would appear, the stars were not right). It must be said that there is something nicely lurid in seeing Cthulhu-clones and their minions rampaging through a city in an Ultraman-like fashion. Throw in some ‘War of the Worlds’-type Martians, and it seems as though someone’s fanfiction prayers have been answered. The Mega Yasheth limited figure is one of Series 1’s must-haves, capable of devastation in the hands of a skilled player.
It is therefore a pity that most of us will likely never - ever - see one.
